DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER AFTERMARKET CONFIRMS
LONG TAIL THEORY
Los Angeles, Calif.—With broadcasting and cable
piping out a steady stream of shows by their own clock, watching television
programs on-demand remains the consumer’s responsibility. But
given the Long Tail theory, which suggests that when people have access
to an unlimited supply of content, having hit shows become less important,
the rising popularity of a line of aftermarket TiVo upgrade kits suggests
that viewers themselves may ultimately rescue the studios and networks
from their insatiable quest for audiences.
The company behind the aftermarket for TiVo digital video
recorder upgrade kits is WeaKnees, who can increase DVR storage capacity
by 50 times the original amount. Founded in 2001 on a whim to fund a
sushi habit, the company has since sold more than tens of thousands
of kits total.
“People want to watch what they want, when they
want. Even if they have to take a screwdriver, to their TiVo to do it,”
said Michael Adberg, a former computer consultant who co-founded WeaKnees
with college classmate Jeff Shapiro, both of who are contributors of
the book TiVo Hacks and technical editors of Leo Laporte’s Guide
to TiVo.
“The fact that we exist means that people want more
variety of content on-demand,” said Shapiro.
To accommodate the legions of storage-hungry viewers,
WeaKnees offers a standalone TiVo, DIRECTV DVR/TiVo combo units with
up to 870 hours capacity, HD TiVos with 130 hours of HD programming,
Maxtor QuickView Hard Drives and expert support on making everything
work.
So while WeaKnees still can’t get viewers access
to vintage, off-air favorites like H. R. Pufnstuf, or Dynasty, the out-cropping
of this aftermarket accessory confirms that the ability to store 900
hours of television gives copyright owners one more reason to digitize
their libraries directly to DVRs via the Internet.
