What is Series3? How is it different from Series2?
The TiVo Series3 HD DVR is the evolution of the TiVo platform and service to record and playback HD video from various sources. The Series3 HD DVR also introduces the world's first and only THX®-certified HD digital video recorder so you can enjoy all of the detail—both in sound and picture—of the original high definition broadcast.
What's unique about this product? The TiVo Series3 HD is the best DVR in its class. Refinements include:

How many hours of programs can I record? The standard/factory unit will record up to 300 hours in standard definition, and up to 32 hours in high definition, depending on your signal source. WeaKnees upgraded Series3 unit record up to 925 hours of standard definition programming, and up to 100 hours of HD programming.
Will the TiVoToGo™ feature and Multi-Room Viewing be available on the Series3 HD? As of November, 2007, these features are fully available on both the TiVo Series3 and TiVo HD. You can use TiVoToGo, Multi Room Viewing, and the feature called "TiVoToComeBack" which allows you to transfer video files from a PC to a TiVo. The only restriction is that you cannot transfer an HD show to an SD TiVo. The TiVo will not down-res the file to make that work. But you can transfer an HD show to a computer or other HD TiVo.
What HD modes does it support? All the standard modes including 1080i & 720p widescreen. The Series3 HD box will also support native pass through and up and down-scaling of video content.
What is a CableCARD™ decoder? A CableCARD decoder is small card that allows a digital TV or set top box to receive Digital Cable programming from your cable provider. It's about the size of a thick credit card, and fits into a special slot built into digital TVs and a growing number of peripheral devices.
For full functionality, the TiVo Series3 HD DVR requires 2 CableCARD decoders, available from your cable provider, to support dual channel digital cable recording. The Series3 HD box can also operate with a single CableCARD, but will be limited to accessing one digital cable channel at a time. You will need to call your cable provider to request CableCARD decoders. Depending on your cable company, CableCARDs may require a small monthly fee, ranging from free to $2 per month and up.
Will the Series3 HD DVR work without CableCARD(s)? Yes. Without CableCARD(s) the Series3 HD DVR will still be able to access in-the clear digital cable channels (generally local channels), basic cable channels, ATSC digital over the air channels (available in high definition in most areas) and analog antenna channels.
Will the Series3 HD box work with my cable company's interactive program guide and video on demand services? The TiVo Series3 HD is capable of receiving analog basic, digital basic, and digital premium cable television programming by direct connection to a cable system providing such programming.
Certain advanced and interactive digital cable services such as video-on-demand, a cable operator's enhanced program guide, and data-enhanced television services may require the use of a separate cable company-provided set-top box . If you wish to receive interactive digital cable services, please contact your local cable company to request connection of a cable company-provided digital set top box to a separate input on your television. The TiVo Series3 HD DVR will continue to record and play analog basic, digital basic and digital premium cable television programming as usual, and with most televisions, you will be able to switch inputs to receive the interactive digital cable services.
